So I am heading down to the coop today to talk to you a little bit about whether or not chickens are noisy. Hey there, It’s Ashley at Square Root Farms and today I’m bringing you a two minute quick tip straight from the coop so you can see I have my girls behind me here today. And the main reason I wanted to film this video down here was to have you be able to hear their little chatter in the background. All right.
Are Chickens Noisy?
Are Laying Hens loud?
No. Most of the time it’s just like this. Of course, they have their clucks and their bocks and their little noises that they make, and sometimes they like to talk about things a little louder than others. But for the most part, it’s a contented clucking noise that they make. It’s nothing too crazy. So laying hens are not that loud.
Are Broiler Chickens loud?
Meat chickens are also pretty quiet. In fact, they’re probably even quieter than laying hens. They just really don’t make that much noise. And that’s partially because they are so young.
You do butcher meat birds when they are at eight weeks old or even earlier, and so the roosters don’t have time to crow and they just don’t make that much noise.
Are Roosters Loud?
The short answer, YES! Where you get into trouble with noise is with roosters.
If you are concerned about having too much noise with close neighbors or for your family, you’ll want to stay away from roosters.
If you’re considering getting a rooster, be aware that they do crow. Yes, it is very loud. Yes, it is very piercing. And yes, they like to crow quite early in the morning (so that’s a nice little bonus).
What About Raising Hens in a Suburban or Even Urban City Area?
Now I understand if you are on a small city lot why you might be a little bit more concerned with even noise levels even for laying hens, but so many people in urban and suburban areas are raising laying hens successfully in small areas
Especially if you have a couple acres, one, three, five acres, you have nothing to be worried about noise wise as long as you stay away from the roosters.
And that’s all for today’s two minute quick tip. Thanks for joining me down at the coop.
